After making the big move to Auckland with her family, Sarah was ready for a career change and thought she would apply to her local BurgerFuel. Fast forward a few years and Sarah has made her way up the BurgerFuel ladder to now be the Store Manager for the newly opened BurgerFuel Dunedin. What keeps her going after all these years? The people of course, with Sarah noting that it’s the people that make the brand. The biggest reward: being named as Store Manager of the Year in 2022, as well as having the opportunity to one day own a store of her very own.
How did you first get involved with BurgerFuel?
My husband and I had made the decision to move (back) to Auckland and I simply wasn’t interested in returning to my career as a chef. I wanted something different but still in hospitality, so I applied for a role at my local BurgerFuel.
What was the thing that attracted you the most to?
I’ve always been a long time fan of the Fuel, my local in Henderson would always look after me so well! What drew me in the most was not available in my previous careers; Front of House training, management potential and the speech “you can manage a store one day too".
What do you tell your mates and family about BurgerFuel, what are the perks and best parts of being part of the store staff?
Humble brag here, but I get to say I was the Store Manager of the Year for BurgerFuel 2022 which is a huge achievement in itself. I also mention the free burgers each shift, the flexibility and skills the job has given my family and also the chance to one day own my very own store! I’ve also made some lifelong friends and met some really cool people along the way!
What motivates and makes you proud to represent the BurgerFuel brand?
Family, connections and opportunities. Also the people! There’s a reason why the crew stick around. I also enjoy all the experiences we get through simply working in a store.
What is one of the greatest opportunities BurgerFuel has given you?
So many to choose from! When I returned from maternity leave, I was offered the role of Training Manager for my franchisee at the time, and post-Covid I was offered a Store Manager position at Silverdale store, which then led into taking over Whangaparaoa as well! I was also really fortunate to be able to move cities to continue working with BurgerFuel, helping open the Dunedin store and work for a different franchisee. This meant being closer to my family and being able to afford living #auckland.
What is one thing you would say to any potential individual who is looking to work at BurgerFuel?
Go for it. Whether you’re around for a short time or a long time, there’s so many opportunities and paths you can take. You’ll learn great skills that are transferable to a lot of other industries and it’s a great change of pace. It’s also a really good starting job as you have the chance to work with a lot of people from all walks of life, and learn some basic cooking skills too!
Varun Oberoi - BurgerFuel Dunedin North Franchisee
Hats off to Sarah, not sure how she manages her workload as well as 2 little girls. Sarah has very strong leadership skills, passion for the brand, she gets on with everyone and creates a very enjoyable work environment. Sarah is always up for new challenges, and is one of the hardest working mums I have come across. It's been a privilege to work beside Sarah, to lean on each other and share the load. I see Sarah as a future franchisee with the knowledge, expertise, care, love and passion she brings on a daily basis. She plays a very important part in running the business and I'm very thankful to have found Sarah and to help her grow to be a future franchisee.
