BURGERFUEL X FLOX

BurgerFuel joins forces with iconic New Zealand artist FLOX for Creative, Sweet, bringing together bold colour, street-art energy and a shared love of doing things differently.

#
INNOVATION

Flox might be a new friend of BurgerFuel, butthere’s already plenty of common ground. As an established New Zealand artistwith a world of her own, she understands the value of giving creativity someactual room to move. That’s exactly what Creative, Sweet has always been about:bringing artists into the BurgerFuel world, giving them a platform, thenresisting the urge to stand over their shoulder and tell them what colour tomake everything. Good art needs space. We’ve got walls. It works out nicely.

For her exclusive BurgerFuel piece, Flox hasbrought her own unmistakable creative language into our slightly strange littleuniverse. It’s a meeting of two worlds rather than an artist being asked tosimply slap a logo on something, which is precisely how we like it. The resultis an artwork that feels properly Flox, with a bit of BurgerFuel runningthrough its veins, created to escape the restaurant walls and find a home onyours. Because burgers disappear pretty quickly. Good art has a habit ofhanging around.

Enter FLOX.

One of Aotearoa’s most recognisable contemporary artists, FLOX has spent more than 20 years developing her signature style of native birds, botanicals, intricate stencil work and unapologetically bold colour.

For Creative, Sweet, we invited FLOX into the World of BurgerFuel, gave her the space to do her thing and watched two colourful worlds collide.

Making space for creativity

For FLOX, the freedom behind the collaboration was part of the appeal.

“I’ve always loved brands that genuinely make room for creativity rather than trying to control it too much,” she says.

“What appealed to me about Creative, Sweet was that BurgerFuel essentially said, ‘Here’s the opportunity — now go do your thing.’ As an artist, that’s such a great place to start.”

While FLOX’s distinctive visual language has been refined over more than two decades, stepping into BurgerFuel territory felt like a natural fit.

“BurgerFuel has always had this bold, slightly rebellious, creative energy around it, so it felt like there was already a natural crossover there.”

It also gave her another opportunity to take art outside the traditional gallery environment.

“Creativity doesn’t always have to exist within the four walls of a gallery — it can be on a massive wall, on a product, in the street, or sitting alongside your burger.”

Where the FLOX and BurgerFuel worlds collide

The starting point for the piece was simple: colour, energy and attitude.

FLOX’s work draws heavily from the natural world, using birds, botanicals and movement alongside the graphic urban influence that has been part of her practice since the beginning.

“Stencils and spray paint have been my tools for over two decades, so there’s always been that street element running through the work. That’s where I think the FLOX and BurgerFuel worlds meet really naturally.”

BurgerFuel’s own colours even found their way directly into the artwork, with FLOX pulling our Pantones into her palette.

“They sit amongst my own layering and colour work, so there are little hits of BurgerFuel running through something that still feels unmistakably FLOX.”

Getting your hands dirty

The finished artwork might look polished, but getting there is a seriously hands-on process.

FLOX begins her work physically — cutting stencils, building layers, spray painting and making marks by hand before the original artwork makes its way towards becoming a finished limited-edition print.

“There’s authenticity in the process and in the mediums I’ve spent my career working with,” she says.

“Yes, the destination is ink on paper — but I got my hands dirty getting there.”

Creative, Sweet also gives us the chance to pull back the curtain and show some of that process, rather than jumping straight to the finished product.

Art made to live somewhere

FLOX’s work has appeared on walls around New Zealand and across the world, but once a piece is finished, she likes the idea of letting it take on a life of its own.

With murals, the work becomes part of a neighbourhood, somebody’s commute or a familiar part of their everyday surroundings.

A limited-edition print is a little different.

“Somebody actively chooses to take it home and give it a place in their own environment,” FLOX says.

“There’s something really lovely about knowing a piece I’ve made might end up on someone’s wall for years. Maybe it reminds them of a moment, makes them smile, brings some colour into their space, or simply becomes something they love looking at.”

And that might be our favourite part of the whole thing.

Someone who’s never stepped inside a gallery or considered themselves an art collector could end up with a piece of FLOX on their wall — along with the story of how it got there.

As FLOX puts it:

“To me, that’s pretty sweet.”
