COVID-19 UPDATE

Update: 9:30am, 3 December, 2021

All BurgerFuel stores in NZ are operating in line with the Government COVID-19 Protection Framework Traffic Light System and Vaccine Passes are required for all staff, suppliers and contractors that enter the premises, as well as for customers to be served in store.

Customers are required to scan in on entry using the Covid-19 Tracer app, wear a facemask and show their Vaccine Pass at the counter to order.

We want to ensure everyone can enjoy our burgers, so for customers that do not have a Vaccine Pass, they can order online, select ‘CONTACTLESS PICK UP’ and wait at the designated contactless pick-up point at the store front for their order.

To note: Some stores may be required to keep dining rooms closed and operate on a temporary click and collect basis while they prepare to operate under the new framework. In this instance, stores will display signage to inform customers and customers can call their local store to find out if they are able to dine in.

We ask that customers please understand that staff are not encouraged to enforce any COVID-19 customer protocols such as, scanning in, facemask wearing and displaying vaccine passes, in the instance of non-compliance and if it is likely to put them in a confrontational situation (Health and Safety at Work Act, 2015).

All stores are operating in accordance with the Traffic Light System framework respective to each region. Please feel reassured that we have strict COVID-19 hygiene protocols in place and the health & safety of our staff and customers remain our highest priority. Please see the measures we are taking below to ensure this:

  • Limited Menu: Some Auckland stores may continue to offer a temporary limited menu as we move into the new COVID-19 Protection Framework. The removal of select items on the menu was initially to ensure our staff could remain physically distanced as they moved about the kitchen, particularly during peak periods and due to the increased customer demand we have been experiencing in our Auckland stores. This was also to ensure that our customers could be served quickly and efficiently, ensuring any queues were managed safely. This has been a temporary measure as stores adjusted to the new operating protocols and we anticipate that Auckland stores will be able to move to the standard menu in the coming weeks as they observe more normalised customer demand levels. Stores outside of Auckland are offering the standard BurgerFuel menu.
  • Hygiene, Health & Safety: We follow regimented hygiene protocols; respective to our staff, our food preparation, order handling and to our kitchens and dining rooms. See below:
  • Staff Hygiene: Have undergone COVID-19 specific online safety training and are required to sanitise and wash hands frequently.
  • Customer & Staff Wellbeing: Our staff are required to stay at home if unwell and we ask the same of our customers. If you are unwell or unsure, please call Healthline on 0800 611 116
  • Food Preparation: Where possible staff are executing touchless food preparation, cooking, stacking, bagging and serving.
  • Facemasks: All customers and customer facing staff are required to wear face masks when in store and while mandated during the COVID-19 Protection Framework, respective to region. For health & safety reasons, some non-customer facing staff (i.e staff working at the grill) are not required to wear facemasks, in accordance with the Covid-19 business food & drink guidelines found HERE. Staff and customers with Facemask exemptions are not required to wear them in store. Staff are not required to enforce mask wearing in situations of non-compliance. This is to protect our staff and avoid confrontation. Government business advice around mask wearing can be found in the ‘Business Advice’ section HERE
  • Gloves: Our staff are required to wear gloves for specific procedural duties in the kitchen, such as handling raw meat in the prepping stage, with care to avoid cross contamination. New Zealand Food Safety advises that gloves can create a warm, moist environment that can foster bacteria and regular hand washing is the best way for food handlers to get rid of illness-causing bacteria and viruses. Our staff ensure touchless cooking, stacking, bagging and serving methods where possible. Additional to this, BurgerFuel is dedicated to lessening our impact on the environment and certified food safe disposable gloves can only be disposed of via landfill. Therefore, we have taken the stance of minimal use of gloves and to ensure hand hygiene is paramount in our stores.
  • Stores: Undergo frequent cleaning with a particular focus on high touch surfaces.
  • Physical Distancing: We continue to adhere to physical distancing guidelines in our stores as mandated during the COVID-19 Protection Framework Traffic Light System, respective to region, and ask that our customers do also.
  • Contact Tracing: Stores are displaying the Covid-19 Government Contact Tracing QR code signage in the window and all customers are required to scan on entry or can request to use a physical register slip, if they are unable to register digitally. We encourage everyone to keep track of their movements responsibly.
  • Queue Control: A crowd controller may be stationed during peak periods to ensure customers are observing safe physical distancing as mandated during the COVID-19 Protection Framework.
  • Online Ordering Management: During peak periods we will ensure online order management to monitor congestion. Please note that your ability to online order may be put on hold if a store is experiencing an influx of orders, or if there are any issues which may contribute to crowding in store i.e eftpos system down. Keep an eye on the BurgerFuel.com home page if our online ordering system is down across all stores.

If your BurgerFuel experience is anything less than expected please get in touch with us via info@burgerfuel.com

We thank you for your continued support and we look forward to feeding your need in the safest way possible.

Update: 8:30pm, 20 September, 2021

Our Auckland stores will be preparing to open their kitchens on Wednesday 22 September with a deep clean of all stores as part of our re-opening procedures. Customers will be able to order online for contactless takeaway at the store front.

We would like our customers to be aware that our Auckland store opening hours may vary, due to stock and demand management and will be running with with a limited menu, temporarily. This is to give our staff time to adjust to the new protocols and to ensure physical distancing in our kitchens.

We will update this page on Wednesday with a detailed overview of how our Auckland stores will be operating in accordance with Level 3 guidelines. We look forward to serving to you.

Stay safe, NZ.

--------------------

Update: 9:00am, 8 September, 2021

Today our stores outside of Auckland will be operating in accordance with Alert Level 2 guidelines.

Customers will be able to order in-store, via phone, or online for contactless takeaway, or dine in safely at select stores.

All customers must scan in before picking up their order or being served and wear a face covering until they have been served their meal.

We will continue to temporarily run a limited menu, as staff adjust to the 1m physical distancing requirements in our kitchens. The standard menu is likely to be reintroduced once stores are comfortable that they can move about the kitchens safely.

Some store opening hours may temporarily vary, due to stock and demand management as stores assess normalised trading patterns. Our staff will be wearing masks while mandated to do so and we ask that our customers also do so and remain masked up in store, unless eating.

We continue to reassure our customers that we have strict hygiene protocols in place and the health & safety of our staff and customers remains our priority. Please note the following information and measures we are taking to ensure this:

OUR CUSTOMERS NEEDS:

Limited Menu: Stores will temporarily offer a limited menu. The removal of select items on the menu is to ensure our staff can remain physically distanced as they move about the kitchen. This is also to ensure that our customers can be served quickly and efficiently, ensuring any queues are managed safely.

Hygiene, Health & Safety: We follow regimented hygiene protocols; respective to our staff, our food preparation, order handling and to our kitchens and dining rooms. All staff will be wearing face masks.

Physical Distancing: We are strictly adhering to physical distancing guidelines at all times, as recommended at Alert Level 2. We ask that our customers please follow the instructions of our stationed staff during busy periods and use the internal and external floor decals as a guide on where to safely stand.

Contact Tracing: Stores will be displaying the NZ COVID-19 Tracer App at the entrance and counter and all customers must scan in to be served. Physical register slips are available for those who cannot scan in. We encourage everyone to keep track of their movements responsibly. Head here to find out more.

Queue Control: To manage any queues and to reinforce physical distancing, we encourage our store management to ensure a crowd controller is stationed during peak periods to guide people on where to stand and ensure people are keeping their distance.

Online Order Management: Due to the increase in traffic to our online order platform, we will utilise online order management to monitor congestion at peak periods to mitigate order backlogs. Please note that your ability to online order may be put on hold if a store is experiencing an influx of orders, or if there are any issues which may contribute to a queue forming i.e eftpos system down. If online ordering is paused, we ask customers to try again later or order via phone, or in store.

Waiting for your order: We can only allow a limited number of customers in our dining rooms, so we ask for your understanding if you are required to wait for your takeaway order at the store front during busy times. This will help our staff to manage the store’s capacity at any given time, with your wellbeing in mind. You must remain seated until you can pick up your order if waiting in store or dining in.

Contactless Dine In: Only stores that can safely operate under the requirements of Alert Level 2 (have a large seating area) will offer dine in. The customer will be guided on where to sit and will be required to pick up their order from a pick up point in the store. No table service will be offered. Please follow designated table signage.

Contactless Pick-Up Options: Customers will have the option to order online, via phone or in-store for contactless takeaway.

Contactless Payment: Our preferred payment method is cashless and all stores have contactless payment in place. We ask that customers use the hand sanitizer provided after using any eftpos terminal. Customer will be required to take their own receipt if they need it.

Your Wellbeing: For the safety of both our staff and customers, we ask that you wear a mask in store and remain masked up unless you are eating. We also ask that you stay at home if you feel unwell. Your burger fix can wait until you are well again! If unsure, please call Healthline on 0800 611 116

OUR STAFF:

- Are required to stay at home if they are feeling unwell

- Have undergone COVID-19 specific online safety training

- Are required to sanitise and wash hands frequently. Please note that staff are required to wear gloves when in direct contact with raw meat i.e cutting chicken or stacking beef, or if they have any cuts on their hands. Outside of this, Food Safety New Zealand has advised that gloves can create a warm, moist environment that can foster bacteria and regular hand washing is the best way for food handlers to get rid of illness-causing bacteria and viruses, regardless if gloves are worn or not. Read more HERE. So please feel reassured if you see staff not wearing gloves, it is because we have strict, scheduled hand sanitising and washing in place.

Secondary to this, certified food safe disposable gloves end up in landfill and do not align with our sustainable ethos.

- Will be wearing face masks while mandated to do so

- Where possible, will be executing touchless food preparation, cooking, stacking, bagging and serving.

- Will be sanitising before and after bagging your order.

- Will be following physical distancing guidelines in kitchens, when moving through our dining rooms or while on breaks, as outlined in Alert Level 2. The temporary Limited Menu has been designed to ease staff into distanced working in our kitchens.

- Will be wearing freshly washed uniforms for each shift, including aprons.

Update: 31 August, 2020, 11:00am

Today, all BurgerFuel stores will be operating at Alert Level 2, with Auckland stores adhering to the 2.5 level variation.

Customers will be able to order in-store or online for contactless takeaway nationwide. Select stores will be offering contactless dine in, if it is safe to do so, and contactless delivery (BurgerFuel.com/Delivery). Some of our stores are currently experiencing supply issues with our gloves, due to the increased demand and priority supply for emergency services and healthcare workers, resulting in a nationwide shortage. BurgerFuel require a high-quality food grade glove and latex options are not suitable for our business, due to the protein in latex rubber causing allergic reactions in some people. Please refer to the recent WorkSafe web page on Managing Supply Issues For PPE for more information on this issue. We can assure you that we are constantly working to secure more gloves for our staff and they are required to follow strict hygiene protocols as an interim measure. Please read on to learn more about our Health & Safety protocols in-store:

Our Customer’s Needs:

- Contact Tracing: Stores will be displaying the Covid-19 Government Contact Tracing QR code signage in the window and we ask that all customers sign in or use the physical register if they are unable to register digitally. We encourage everyone to keep track of their movements responsibly. Head here to find out more.

- Wait Areas: We can only allow a limited number of customers in our dining rooms, so we ask for your understanding if you are required to wait for your in-store, online or phone orders at the store front during busy times. This will help our staff to manage the store’s capacity at any given time, with your wellbeing in mind.

- Contactless Dine In: Some stores that can safely operate under the requirements of Alert Level 2/2.5 (have a seating plan that supports physical distancing) will offer dine in. Table signage will guide the customer on where to sit and there will be a order pick up point in the store. No table service will be offered.

- Contactless Pick Up Options: Customers will continue to be able to phone or order online for contactless takeaway, or may be able to select contactless delivery (select stores).

Update: 13 August 2020, 10:42am

*BurgerFuel Rotorua Redwoods Update*

The BurgerFuel Redwoods staff that were working on the Monday shift when members of the Auckland family visited the store (family who recently tested positive for Covid-19) are considered ‘casual contacts’. Please head HERE to learn more about the definition between 'casual' and 'close' contacts, as defined by the Ministry of health.

====================

Update: 12 August 2020, 10:00pm

On Wednesday evening at 7pm, we were notified that our BurgerFuel Redwoods Rotorua store was visited by the Auckland family who recently tested positive for Covid-19. The franchisee was advised by the Deputy Health Protection Officer from the Bay of Plenty DHB that the visit had occurred on Monday 10th, between 7 – 8pm.

We are awaiting further details from the Ministry of Health, but can confirm that, upon receiving this information, the store was immediately closed and a detailed “deep clean” undertaken. All five staff members who worked the Monday shift have been isolated and are currently undergoing testing for Covid-19. No other staff members have been in contact with those on shift and we can confirm that staff from the Fairy Springs store do not work at the Redwoods store.

We anticipate that the BurgerFuel Redwoods store will re-open tomorrow, exceptionally clean and with a fresh crew of staff. We will continue to keep you updated here.

If you have any concerns, please contact Health Line Ph: 0800 611 116 or click here for the Rotorua community testing centre.

Stay safe NZ

==========

Update 12th May, 2020, 11:04am

As New Zealand moves into Alert Level 2 on Thursday 14th May, it will remain very much status quo for all BurgerFuel stores nationwide for the week to follow. During this time, we encourage customers to continue to order online, or place a phone order, for contactless takeaway at the store front. Select stores will continue to offer contactless Kerbside Pick Up and contactless Delivery.

We will look to play it safe, and for the seven days following the Alert Level 2 changeover, we will take this time to ensure our procedures are correct and work with our store owners to select which of our stores can safely open for dine in or in-store (over the counter) ordering. This will allow franchisees, with suitable space in their front of house, the chance to plan and prepare for opening their dining rooms under the government requirements.

Unfortunately, not all of our stores have dining room layouts that will enable them to maintain physical distancing, so some may not be able to offer a dine in option at Alert Level 2. But for the most part, we look forward to being able to welcome customers back into our in-store environments very soon, in the safest way possible.

We want our customers to feel reassured that we continue to have strict hygiene protocols in place and the health and safety of our staff and customers remains our number 1 priority. Please note the following measures we are taking to ensure this and for your general information:

Our Customer’s Needs:

- Hygiene, Health & Safety: We continue to follow regimented hygiene protocols; from our staff, to our food preparation and order handling, pick up and delivery services and to our kitchens and dining rooms.

- Physical Distancing: We are strictly adhering to physical distancing guidelines in our stores and at our store fronts, at all times. We ask that our customers please follow the instructions of our stationed staff at the front of house and use the internal floor stickers and external pavement stickers as a guide on where to safely stand.

- Contact Tracing: All in-store and phone order customers will be required to register and sign in via digital or physical customer registration, before paying for their order. A staff member will fill in the form for you, if you are unable to use the digital registration. This register is strictly for the purpose of contact tracing, at the request of the Ministry of Health, to assist with the management and reduction of transmission of Covid-19. Under no circumstances will it be used for marketing purposes. You can find out more here or head to the Covid19.govt.nz website.

- Contactless Dine In: Stores that can safely operate under the requirements of Alert Level 2 (have a large seating area) will offer dine in. There will be window signage displayed to let you know. The customer will be guided on where to sit and will be required to pick up their order from a pick up point in the store. This is to ensure the customer is only liaising with a single server (till person) one time only, upon ordering.  If dining room is closed, toilets will also be closed. If dining room is open, toilets will be accessible and frequently cleaned.

- Contactless Takeaway Options: Customers will be able to phone, order in-store or order online for contactless takeaway. Some stores will be able to allow customers to wait in-store for their order (if they can maintain physical distancing and capacity will allow). Select stores will be offering contactless Kerbside Pick Up (BurgerFuel.com/Kerbside) or contactless Delivery (BurgerFuel.com/Delivery). Please refer to our store locations page for information as to what services your store is offering.

- Queue Control: To manage any queues, and to reinforce physical distancing during peak hours and busy periods, we will have a crowd controller stationed to guide people on where to stand and ensure people are keeping their distance. At these busier times we will also have an Online Order Management person to monitor online order congestion, to mitigate order backlogs and crowds building at the storefront. Please note that your ability to online order may be put on hold if a store is experiencing an influx of orders, or there is an issue which may contribute to a queue i.e if the eftpos system is down.

- Contactless Payment: We will only accept cashless payments at this time and will have contactless payment in place. We ask that customers use the hand sanitiser provided after using the eftpos terminal. All customer will be required to take their own receipt.

- Your wellbeing: For the safety of both our staff and customers, we ask that anyone who doesn’t feel well, doesn’t come to store. We ask that you simply hold off on getting your burger fix until you are well again! If unsure, please call Healthline on 0800 358 5453

Our Staff:

- Are required to stay at home if they are feeling unwell.

- Have undergone continuous COVID-19 specific online safety training on top of our thorough health and safety e-learning throughout lockdown.

- Are required to sanitise every 5 minutes and wash hands frequently.

- Where possible, will be executing touchless food preparation, cooking, stacking, bagging and serving.

- Our staff will be sanitising before and after bagging your order.

- Will continue to follow 1m physical distancing guidelines in kitchens and when moving through our dining rooms or on breaks.

- Will be wearing freshly washed uniforms for each shift, including aprons.

Our Kitchens & Dining Rooms

- Will have regimented hourly cleaning with a particular focus on high touch surfaces.

- Food preparation, cooking, stacking and bagging will be mainly touchless, using gloves and utensils.

- We will ensure our dining rooms can only be opened for dine in if physical distancing can be maintained at all times. Please refer to the ‘Queue Control’ and ‘Wait Areas’ information in the ‘Your Customer Needs’ section above, for more information.

If your BurgerFuel experience is anything less than expected please get in touch with us via email or social media if you have any queries.

We thank you for your continued support as we continue to feed your need in the safest way possible.

Updated 5:13pm – Wednesday 29/04/2020

Day one of reopening saw BurgerFuel stores inundated with a stampede of customers, well beyond what was anticipated.

Since opening at Alert Level 3, our staff are navigating many new procedures such as strict hygiene protocols, physical distancing guidelines and contactless food preparation in all kitchens.

On Tuesday 28th April, these new procedures, combined with major volumes of orders following 5 weeks of no operation, resulted in some BurgerFuel stores struggling to control crowds at peak collection times.

Today and moving forward we are working hard on a number of improvements to ensure the wellbeing of customers and staff.

We will be limiting online orders to ensure food production and queues are manageable, all stores are now required to have a crowd controller at the store front at all times, to reinforce physical distancing and have also provided additional video training to guide staff and ensure they’re operating in adherence with the government’s guidelines.

Staff are also required to follow physical distancing guidelines, strict cleaning protocols and personal hygiene regimes - such as frequent hand washing and hand sanitising every 5 minutes.

We ask if customers could please be understanding if there is a delay with their order to help ensure their safety and others by following these simple guidelines when heading to a store:

Physical Distancing: Unfortunately, we can only allow for physical distancing guidance in the immediate area outside of our stores. We have pavement decals for guidance directly in front of the store, but need customers help and ask that they use their best judgement and follow the 2m rule if a queue forms. We will also have staff stationed at the store front to call out customers’ orders, so please try to form an orderly queue and wait for your name to be called.

Phone order or Download the BurgerFuel app: There is currently increased traffic and pressure on our website and online ordering system. For the safety of customers, we will be monitoring & staggering online orders, if online ordering is unavailable – customers should check back after a few minutes. Customers can also try calling the store or ordering from the BurgerFuel app. We are working overtime to ensure any technical issues are dealt with asap.

Peak times: Expect that BurgerFuel stores are likely to be at maximum capacity during peak trading hours. Try again a bit later, try avoiding peak dinner rush (6-7pm) or try ordering from a nearby store (they may be getting less orders than the store customers normally order from).

We are adapting to a totally new environment, with safety being our highest priority. We appreciate our customers support and we ask for their patience and assistance to ensure that physical distancing is maintained at all times.

- Contactless Pick Up Options: Customers will be able to order online and choose from 3 different contactless pick up and delivery services – At Store Pick Up, Kerbside Pick Up and Delivery. At Store Pick Up will be available at all stores, whereas select stores will be offering Kerbside Pick Up and Delivery. Please refer to our store locations page from Saturday 25th April for up to date information around your store’s opening hours and what services they are offering and head to BurgerFuel.com/Kerbside or BurgerFuel.com/Delivery for more information on these new services.

- For the safety of both our staff and customers, we ask that anyone who doesn’t feel well doesn’t come to store. We ask that you simply hold off on getting your burger fix until you are well again! If unsure, please call Healthline on 0800 358 5453

- If your pick up or delivery experience is anything less than expected please get in touch with us via email info@burgerfuel.co.nz or social media if you have any queries.

Original statement: Tuesday March 17th, 12 noon

--

As the impact of COVID-19 grows, we think it is important to let you know we continue to be open across the country.

The situation is rapidly changing, but right now we plan to keep our doors open, our grills hot and to continue to make burgers for you, your family and the wider community  – just with a few more precautions and a double down on safety protocols. We continue to provide quality food and take pride in our health and safety practices. We know that certain situations require us to implement updated procedures, listen to the experts and be nimble so we can continue to cater to our customers. This is one of those situations.

Your needs
We know that you will be relying quite heavily on eating at home or quick pick-up right now. In order to feed your needs, we have implemented the following:

  • We continue to encourage you to order online and pick-up in-store, supporting reduced social contact.
  • Stores are open and will be until further notice. We will promptly inform you, via social media channels or our website, of any changes to opening hours, in-store menu selection or any other changes that may arise.
  • As always, if your experience in-store is anything less than expected, please let our staff in-store know at once.  Otherwise please get in touch with us via email or social media if you have any further questions.

Our stores
Peace of mind and risk mitigation goes a long way, so we have implemented (above and beyond our usual extensive health and safety programme):

  • All stores have sanitiser stations available on entry and on counters.
  • We have reduced front-of-house reusable touch points.
  • All stores have cashless and touchless facilities available.
  • We have doubled the amount of deep cleaning procedures in our stores.

Our staff
Our teams have always taken in pride in offering you the best experience. We consider our people central to everything we do and as such, have implemented the following to support them during this time:

  • If any team member feels unwell, they will remain at home, and we encourage our customers to do the same. If unsure, please call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.
  • All staff undergo continuous training in adherence with our thorough health and safety protocol and auditing. We have extended this by implementing specific COVID-19 online safety training to all stores.

It goes without saying this is a tricky time for us all. We cannot predict how this situation may progress; we are closely monitoring this in real-time based on the advice the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health are providing. We are reviewing our approach regularly.

Thank you for your continued support.
