2020 MCLAREN SPEEDTAIL

A hand-assembled, limited production hybrid sports car and McLaren’s first ever Hyper-GT. This beauty is one of only 106 ever made and is the only one in New Zealand.

The Speedtail is considered the fastest McLaren made to date and the most aerodynamically efficient. You’ll feel ready for take-off in the cockpit, with dihedral doors and a 3-seat layout, which is designed to create a unique sense of space and balance behind the wheel.

With a 5.2m long, sleek and seamless carbon fibre body, it’s the ultimate example of lightweight engineering. Delivering the greatest power and torque of any McLaren road car, with a 1070PS hybrid powertrain at its core, the Speedtail can reach top speeds of over 400 kilometres per hour (0-299 km/h in 12.8 seconds. What?!) and recharges while driving via a wireless charging pad.

And because sun visors and wing mirrors are so early 2000's, it’s fitted with electrochromic glass, which darkens at the push of a button and uses retractable mounted HD cameras to keep your backing on point. There's too many incredible features to name, but all are carefully considered and mostly have the key objective to reduce drag.

Long story short, it's designed to be seriously quick.

2009 BUGATTI VEYRON

A mid-engine sports car named after racing driver, Pierre Veyron, this model is the only in NZ and is one of 200 in the world – it's serial #171.

It features an 8.0-litre, quad-turbo-charged W16 cylinder engine, generating over 1000 PS. And with a dual-clutch, direct-shift, computer-controlled, automatic transmission, it has a shift time of less than 150 milliseconds.

The Veyron can be driven in semi or fully-automatic mode and uses tyres specifically to accommodate the Veyron’s top speed. It can reach top speeds of up to 340 kilometres per hour, and at 220 km/h, hydraulics lower the car until it has a ground clearance of approx. 9cm and the wing and spoiler deploy. This ‘handling mode’ holds the car to the road.

Top Speed mode is next level, where the driver needs to toggle a top speed key, which triggers a checklist to establish whether the car and driver are ready to hit top speed. In this mode, the rear spoiler retracts, front diffusers shut and ground clearance drops to 6.5cm.

This machine is made for ultimate performance and safety, with a sophisticated look to boot. The Veyron was discontinued in late 2014, but special edition models continued to be produced until 2015.

2015 MCLAREN P1

With technology closer to that of an aircraft, than a conventional car, this P1 is one of 375 in the world and again, the only of its kind in NZ.

It’s a limited-production, plug-in hybrid sports car with a mid-mounted twin turbo V8 engine, that produces 737PS, but has been designed to work in conjunction with the electric motor, which take the powertrains output to 916PS.

The electric motor and petrol engine produce a combined power output of 674 kW and 900 Nm of torque. This bad boy can reach top speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour and underwent a comprehensive testing programme in it’s development. This was to ensure that the car’s state of the art powertrain could deliver and perform anywhere its owner chose to take it.

Prototypes travelled the world from hot weather testing in California’s Death Valley, to temperatures as low as -40C in the Artic Circle. It then passed the ultimate test and the toughest challenge for any performance car, northern Germany’s 20.8km track, Nürburgring Nordschleife. With little margin for error, the track has 150 corners, sharp crests and 300m of elevation changes - the P1 aced the target of a sub-seven-minute lap.

This is one stunning piece of automotive design and the pinnacle of performance.
